More Americans are becoming victims of insurance fraud.  As workers lose health care coverage they had through a former employer, or uninsured workers look to provide health care services for themselves and their families, more are finding that they are becoming targets of elaborate, expensive scams.

Here are a few tips by Planet Antares Scam Solutions to help avoid becoming victimized by insurance scams.

Do careful research. Contact the insurance commission in your state to verify that an insurer is licensed to write policies where you live.  If an insurer is headquartered out of state, look for information about where else they’re licensed to provide coverage. Ask about any complaints the commission has received regarding the insurer.

Ask the insurer to provide a list of covered services, and identify doctors and hospitals that accept the carrier’s policies. Contact the business manager in your doctor’s office or at your local hospital to ask about their experiences with this insurance carrier.  If they report negative experiences

Understand how you will be billed for your coverage, when your coverage starts and what, if anything, is specifically excluded from your policy.  Understand the deductibles and co-pays associated with your policy and how you’ll be billed for those.

Compare policy costs and be suspicious of policies that are much lower in cost than other policies you’ve reviewed.

If you’re working with an independent insurance agent, ask about all policies that the agent can provide.  If the agent clearly prefers one policy or one company over another, be cautious and do additional research before signing up for coverage.

If you find that you’ve been scammed, report the information about your policy to the insurance commission in your state immediately and ask for additional directions on how you should proceed.
